Nextel cell upgrade question?

I currently have a Nextel i730. Want to purchase a Nextel Blackberry 7100i cell phone RIM Bluetooth. Asked our local Nextel store if I could swap out the SIM card and she said no, have to upgrade to the blackberry service. I just want to use it for a cell phone and to text; can I still do this?

Maybe put your sim card in the phone and see if it works!
