nextel i760 text messaging?

i just got a Motorola i760 with Nextel and i started texting. now on my old phone i used to be able to send a text and instantly shut my cell phone with the i760 i send a text message and if i shut it the text message cancels is there a way to send a text message with my new phone and shut it without canceling the text.
