Unlocking a sprint phone? (to use on virgin mobile)?

First off, i want to buy a LG Rumor (which is a sprint phone). however, i have a virgin mobile plan and dont really want to get into a contract. Can i buy an LG rumor (somewhere?) and put it on my virgin mobile plan? i kno virgin mobile is on the sprint network. so i wonder how that would work. thanks in advance.
