You can buy a Nextel phone and switch with little or no problem.
However, Nextel's network coverage area is much, much smaller than Sprint's. If you live in a metropolitan area, then that's usually not a problem. If you live in a smaller town or away from a big city, you will have problems with Nextel's coverage.
Sprint phones use a technology called CDMA, and Sprint maintains agreements with Altell, Verizon and other comapnies that allows Sprint users to use those companies' towers to "roam" at no charge. Nextel phone use a technology called "iDEN". Nextel phones are the only ones in the country using this technology. Therefore---no roaming coverage.
