Sprint PCS Smart Device PPC-6700?

can i use this like a regular phone and always leave it running? or do i have to turn it off when im using it....it seems like the battery will die right away or am i wrong?
* or do i have to turn it off when im not using it, my mom wants to buy one, more for the cell phone not for the computer part ( she likes the way it looks )
