I don't know about the $1 a day thing. However, I got a prepaid phone when my contract ended with my last cell phone co, because I got tired of all of the crap and extra charges that appeared out of nowhere.
I have T-Mobile and every time I get a new phone I keep the same number. I just got a razr (however you spell it) and have my same #. Call the store that you normally get your minutes from and ask them, but if it's T-Mobile then yes.
It's a great way to have a cell phone. I spend about $30 - $40 a month on minutes instead of a bill that was anywhere from $60 - $90 before.
