If you like crappy service, go with TMobile.
I signed up with them in late 2002 when they were just starting to advertise. I was on a $39.99 monthly rate of 1000 minutes, which was great. In April 2003, I started using my phone more since I did not have a landline, and I called to upgrade to the $49.99 plan which offered 3000 minutes. Within a few minutes, the customer service representative confirmed that my plan had been upgraded. I kind of thought it was a bit quick for him to do that, so an hour later I called again and spoke to another customer service representative who also confirmed that I had been upgraded to the 3000 minute plan.
A couple of weeks later I get my bill, and it is a bill for $1600. I called TMobile and spoke to 3 people, including a supervisor who said that there is no record of me upgrading. They do have record of me calling, but there is no record as to what I called for. Since they supposedly "record" their service calls, I told them to go back and listen to the recorded conversations with the two customer service reps I spoke to. The supervisor told me they don't keep these conversations for more than a few days. I was on the phone with her for an hour with our conversation going nowhere, and all she offered me was a $200 off discount from the $1600 balance. I told her to go ahead and try to collect the balance because I will fight it and not pay it. I filed a complaint with the FCC as well.
It has been 5 years and TMobile hasn't gotten a dime from me, (and it hasn't stopped me from having good credit). I did some research and found several websites from former employees who worked there. Apparently their customer service (at least at that time) was mostly college kids who basically didn't give a rat's ass about doing their job correctly. Also, the times I called I would be waiting for a customer service rep for an average of 20-30 minutes, which is ridiculous! It may have changed since then, but I'm not willing to switch providers to find out.
Verizon has been great the last 5 years. Every problem that I've ever had, whether it's a technical problem or a billing problem, they have resolved. I always get a live person on the phone within a minute of calling.
Verizon is great, and many corporations use them- that's because they offer great service and are reliable with signal bars. They've been #1 for several years now because of it. Yes they are a bit more expensive (offer less minutes for the money) than other companies, but you get what you pay for.
