Which is better-Verizon cell phone company or Sprint?

My husband and I are looking for a reliable cell phone company. He will use his for work and I for emergency and possibly long distance. We noticed on a prepaid tht out in the countrysides we loose connection. what's your opinion?
let me add i live in the san antonio, tx. area
