My girlfriend has verizon and so do most of my friends and family.

If your girlfriend and most of your family have Verizon then yes it is the company for you because you get unlimited Verizon to Verizon calling and I'm guessing you live near your gf if her service is good yours should be as well. (the coverage is however much better under a contract)
