How do I sync my computer with an Audiovox SMT 5600 pda phone?

I have a computer that runs XP. The phone is a Smartphone PDA. I have been trying to sync the phone with the computer through ActiveSync 4.5 via USB port and my computer does not know anything is there. I have tried everything the Microsoft website says to do.
