Default Why does Apple only offer the iphone through AT&T?

I really like the iphone, but do not really want to switch to AT&T to get it. So that brings me to the question, why does Apple only offer their iphone through one service provider anyway. I mean what does Apple care and why do they exercise control over that? Also, wouldn't they be getting more money if they allowed all carriers to offer it?
