I have been bought an apple iPhone unlocked for a christmas present..?

I have heard many rumours about unlocked iPhones, and I was just wondering if anybody could give me a bit of insight on weather it matters or not that its unlocked. And also, if I have troubles with the unlocked phone, could I not just take it to a store and get it repaired and changed to contract straight away? Thank you.
