If i buy an apple iphone on ebay how do i activate it to my account once i get it?

I already have AT&T and Im thinking about getting the iphone. I am just trying to figure out why people spend more money on it on ebay rather than just buy it brand new on the apple site? I am really confused. Whats the benefit of buying it on ebay rather than on apple.com and whats the difference in activating them between buying it on apple.com or on ebay. Thanks.
