my iphone wont boot up past the apple screen, how do i get it back on?

okay, so, i was texting on my iphone and it went dead. when i put it on the charger the greyish screen with the apple on it appeared, but it wont go past that. i have to hold the sleep and home button at the same time to turn it off. how do i get it to go past that screen? PLEASE HELP!
