I want to buy the iphone 3g when it comes out and unlock it. However, I heard that Apple will not be selling them like the first iphone. How will I be able to unlock the iphone 3g when it comes out? Is my only option something like eBay? But then it will be much higher...
If I buy it, but then cancel it and pay the 175 fee its still worth it. But the FCC will cancel these fees soon

Hmm well let's do the math. $200 + $175 = $375 for a dead iPhone. Or you may $400+ for a eBay jailbroken iPhone. What's the point? You basically don't want the phone for it's voice service since your plan to cancel it right after ya buy it. If your looking to use it as a music player or something then why not just buy the iPod Touch? It even has wifi internet cabibility and doesn't have the contract obligations of the iPhone. As for the FCC canceling these fees keep dreaming.

the apple stores will be sellingthe phones but ONLY letting you out with a contract for tthe £100/£159 price or on a PAYG for £300 more. and they will be ACTIVATED and logged against your name and address even the PAYG phones!

from experience unlocked iphones/ipod touches are ore problem that they are worth in Europe (maybe worth it in the US where carriers are cheaper). remember unlocked iphones can be bricked by a software update and iphone 3g will have iphone 2.0 software with over the air updates so if you jailbrake/unlock it you ma find it updated and dead overnight.

the only safe way to unlock it is with the unlocking SIM carrier mentioned on iphone atlas and other sites as to the software its still with the correct carrier!
