Default Can I buy an Iphone at Apple store without activating it? Like to give

as gift to someone else? I do have att service, i just want to purchase an iphone for my husband for his bday, but i dont want to ruin surprise by taking him up there to buy it. i want to pick it up myself, then once i give it to him we'll go up there to activate to his account etc... i just want the iphone itself in box nothing else attached... can that be done???
