Apple iPhone? Without contract ...?

If I buy an iPhone in South Africa will I be able to use it in America without signing up with AT&T? I would buy one here but I don't want to move onto a contract because my monthly cell bill doesn't justify it but my phone has broken and I want to upgrade.
