Well, they are not comparable. This is like comparing ice cream to a dog.
The Chocolate (LG VX8550) is a great phone but suffers when it comes to features. It lacks the advanced V CAST Mobile TV but does have V CAST video and music. It does suffer from some defects and it is one of the most returned phones. Have you checked out the new Flip Chocolate (LG Chocolate3)? It is amazing and includes an advanced memory player and I would consider it better than the iPhone...even though the iPhone is amazing (but not the best).
The iPhone includes many nice features like videos, an HTML browser, and more. It includes an ok music player. I don't recommend it since it is provided by the AT&T network which isn't the best.
Verizon Wireless (the provider of the chocolate) is the ONLY wireless provider in the United States to have an ALL texting plan. This plan was aimed at deaf or hard of hearing customers...but anyone can get it. It is $34.99 per month and includes Unlimited Messaging (TEXT/PIX/Video), Unlimited Data for internet (and get it now/media center).

Overall, I would recommend ANY phone from Verizon Wireless. AT&T provides choppy coverage (especially 3G coverage, which the iPhone 3G likes to use). Verizon Wireless is the coverage leader and customer service leader as rated by JD Power & Associates.
