Default Is bad cell phone clarity due to service provider or phone?

I have recently signed up with Credo Mobile which uses the Sprint network. I got a Sanyo Katana phone to work with it.

I noticed when I was talking to my friend that the clarity of her words were not great. I would have to get her to repeat herself because her words sounded fuzzy.

I liken it to a train conductor over the loudspeaker - the volume is fine, but the words are unclear.

I am wondering if it could be the fault of the cell phone itself or the service? I live in a very high service area.

Thanks for your input!
