Default "Flashing" cell phones to work with other services?

So I walked into my cricket store to buy a used phone cause my slider remix is old (yes i know) and doesnt work so well anymore. He tried to get me to buy a few phones he had, and I noticed a few were from Verizon and Sprint.
I asked him about it and he says he can flash some phones and make them work with cricket. Some of them to work with some of the basic functions such as calling and text messaging, but not picture messaging or internet. Other phones he says he can do the whole thing. I was wondering if its something thats common, and whether cricket will still give me good customer service if I don't have one of their phones.
