What's the best cell phone service that doesn't have an annual contract?

The only ones I know of are Virgin Mobile and the AT&T GoPhone. But the Virgin coverage area is pretty terrible here and the GoPhone seems expensive.

What other options are there?
How's the service? Coverage area? Pricing?
