Default Do cell phone providers allow you to test their service before signing a contract?

I've heard that certain cell phone providers allow you to test a cell phone for several days to ensure you get coverage. Does anyone know who does that? I'm asking because we're looking for a new carrier and I'm nervous because our current carrier has VERY poor service. I don't want to be stuck in the same situation again in a few months...
