How is the cell phone reception in central america for a U.S. service provider??

My girlfriend and her family are in Guatemala (and surrounding areas) for three weeks. It is now 8/5/07 late in the night and i haven't had contact with her since early in the morning of 8/3/07. I was wondering if anyone had traveled to this area recently and had trouble communicating via cell phone to america.
