How do you unlock an AT&T cell phone to be compatible with T-Mobile service?

I was just given an AT&T cell phone for my birthday, that the person only used for a few weeks and switched to Verizon. Except I have T-mobile, so how would I unlock this phone so that I can just put my T-mobile SIM card in it? If anybody could help that would be great, thanks
