Inserting travel charger on LG Shine cell phone?

I just got the phone and can't get the travel charger into the side slot because the little plastic piece does not allow the charger to fit when the plastic piece is opened. Is this a flaw with all LG's or just maybe my phone was built wrong? Should I send it back? Or should I rip off the plastic piece?
