Default Would a MicroSD card of atleast 4GB be compatible with Sony Ericsson W880?
Ideally, I would like to have the option of upgrading to 8GB but 4GB would be fine.

Not sure about the w880 but most newe blackberrys are not supposed to work with anything over a 2 G .....although a 4 G will work



8G may be too much for thephone to handle

Nope, Sony loves to use their own proprietary formats. You will have to get an M2 card to work with it.
