...cingular/AT&T uses? does this have any truth to it?

no its t mobile and att that use the same type

verizon,altell, and sprint use the less popular kind

Verizon doesn't use GSM. Verizon cell phones don't have sim cards which are required to use the GSM network. Verizon uses a technology called CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) which doesn't require a sim card and is generally more reliable and has better voice quality. It also has faster data speeds.
