Default ATT Mobile question (Cell-Phone Broke)?

Okey.... so I have a Palm Centro and I have had it for about 10 MONTHS and I accidentally sat on it and the screen leaked. I have no insurance... When I called ATT, they said I have to pay 240 dollars for a new one when (initially) I bought the phone for 80 dollars 10 months ago..... The cost to fix the phone is 130. Alot of my friends said that if i send it to ATT they are going to send a new one (i.e.: they do not check if the phone is damaged or not... they just send it) Is the possible?

What other things can I say to the ATT service representative to get a new phone

I CANNOT AFFORD TO GET A NEW PHONE
AND I DON'T WANNA FIX AN 80 DOLLAR PHONE FOR 137 DOLLARS EITHER

Please Help
thx
