Alltel has been providing excellent service for a while now (remember, no cell phone is going to work everywhere you go regardless...one will work in some areas and not in others and vise versa for your friends on (whatever) provider).
However, Verizon announced a plan to purchase Alltel, so pretty soon it's going to be converting over to Verizon...not sure if the cheap plans will stick or not.
Main reason they were so cheap is they were mostly a regional phone company..if you traveled outside of thier coverage area you were considered roaming...much like if my verizon phone enters alltel territory, it's considered roaming. Both had roaming agreements, but, soon they'll merge.
