[Sharing]How to edit DVD video with Windows Movie Maker?
DVD movie still plays essential role in our audio/video daily life in spite of prosperity of online video and handheld devices. The problem is that DVD movie is not editable and you can only watch the movie the way it is presented on the disk. This is a time of individual customization and showing your own style, why not tries to edit a movie and watch it in whatever way you like. To edit the DVD movie, you need to convert DVD to AVI firstly and then import the exported AVI videos to Adobe Premiere, Windows Movie Maker, and Sony Vegas etc. First let us start from what is AVI.
About AVI
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave Which is defined by Microsoft. It can work as a container to be embedded with different codec, such as DivX, XviD, etc. The AVI video generally brings high quality, but occupies larger disk space. It is suitable for further video editing.
To edit DVD with Windows movie maker, you need a DVD Ripper to convert DVD to AVI. Pavtube DVD Ripper offers AVI formats with various codec, which will certainly meet your needs to play, and edit video etc
1. Run Pavtube DVD Ripper
If you have not installed it yet, please download the free trial version of Pavtube DVD Ripper.
2. Add DVD video by clicking "DVD ROM “or "DVD Folder or IFO File ".

3. Choose the AVI format on the "Format" drop down box.
There are 6 profiles with AVI as output format.

Pavtube DVD Ripper offer several options for AVI with uncompressed codec and less compressed codec. The uncompressed codec is available for the profile "Losseless uncompressed avi". The profile is set with recommended settings, and you can also change the output format by clicking the "Settings" button. There are six video codec for uncompressed AVI: BGR24, RGB555, YUY2, UYVY, and RGBA32.

channel with the video, as the effect is the same as that with RGBA32. Choose RGBA32 if there is alpha channel.
There are 5 profiles for AVI with less compressed codec, AVI – Audio Video Interleaved, XVID Video, DIVX Video, AVI with DV Codec, Creative Zen Player Video.
The profile for Creative Zen Player Video is particular for Creative Zen with preset image dimension and video bit rate. You can choose the codec from DivX and XviD.
DV AVI can be transferred to digital camcorder.
4. Check the box to start Converting
After conversion, just click the "Open" button, and you will find the output AVI files.
Now you have got the output AVI videos, and the rest of the work goes to video editing software. Let’s take Windows movie maker for example.
Step1: Import your video. Get your video onto your computer any way you need too. Open Windows Movie Maker.

Step2: Edit your AVI video. Open your storyboard by clicking "View storyboard." Your storyboard will be your timeline and where you will do most of your editing. For you movie folks we can call it your "cutting room floor." To put your video in the storyboard, drag it from your library to the storyboard. Click the plus sign on your timeline so you can see video and audio lines. If you want to add extra audio to your piece, import it the same way you did your video.
Step3: Play your AVI video and watch for where you want to cut and delete the extraneous video. Place your timeline cursor (the blue line that crosses perpendicular to the timeline) where you want to cut your video and split it by choosing "Edit split." Split your original video as many times as you want. Once you split the video you see the rest of the original video in your library. Delete the video you don't want by pressing "Delete" on your keyboard.
Step4: Add video by dragging it to the storyboard. Make sure your cursor is where you want it on the timeline because the program will automatically place your audio track where your cursor is. You will notice your audio track goes into the audio space on your timeline. To edit audio follow the same steps as the video.

Sharing Tip
I'm a Pavtube DVD Ripper user. It is really good. Here is the tip I like to share with you. You are really worth trying Pavtube DVD Ripper.
This guide demonstrates the simple steps to convert DVD videos to MPEG movies. Converting DVD to MPEG enables you to play on computer, to get video segments for burning to Video CD (VCD), Super VCD (SVCD), and even DVD.
About DVD
DVD generally stands for Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc. There are VOB, IFO, BUP files in the folder named VIDEO_TS, under the DVD folder. The VOB files generally contain showing data like video, audio, subtitle, etc. The IFO files contain the navigation information of how the data show up. The BUP files are the backup of the IFO files.
About MPEG
MPEG, an acronym for o the Moving Picture Experts Group, has standardized several compression formats, such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (MP4), etc. MPEG-1 is the initial video and audio compression standard. It was designed for video with transmission rate of about 1.5 Mbps, and is used as the standard for VCD now. MPEG-2 is video and audio standard for broadcast-quality television. It is used for over-the-air digital television ATSC, DVB and ISDB, digital satellite TV services like Dish Network, digital cable television signals, SVCD, and with slight modifications, as the .VOB (Video OBject) files that carry the images on DVDs.
Even though the DVD video is encoded with MPEG-2, the video data is formatted as VOB, and you need a DVD ripper to get the MPEG video from the VOB files. Pavtube DVD Ripper offers the conversion from DVD to MPEG-1 and from DVD to MPEG, including MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 with output as .mpg format.
1. Run Pavtube DVD Ripper.
2. Add DVD video by clicking "Load DVD" or "Load IFO".

3. Choose the MPG format in the Format box.
The ripper provides four profiles with MPG as output format: Super Video CD (*.mpg), Video CD (*.mpg), MPEG1 Video (*.mpg), MPEG2 Video (*mpg). MPEG1 can be used for VCD, and MPEG2 can be used for SVCD and DVD.
Note: The profile for DVD (*.vob) is also encoded with MPEG2, but the output format is VOB.
Select the profile according to the usage of the output video. The video is encoded with NTSC standard by default. Click "Settings" button if you want to change it to PAL.

The VCR and DVD player are manufactured with NTSC or PAL standard to play corresponding VCD, SVCD and DVD. If you want to play video with PAL standard on a VCR with NTSC standard, you may not get the image.
NTSC, an acronym for National Television System Committee, is the TV format used in United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Philippines, and other countries.
PAL, an acronym for Phase Alternating Line, is the TV format used in most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and other countries.
After changing the settings, confirm and click the "OK" button to save the changes.
4. Start conversion.
Check the files for conversion, and click the "Start" button.
You may also further edit the DVD with subtitle; customize settings like brightness, contrast, video image, video length, etc. before conversion.

Thank you for sharing. Do you know this function?
Are you a Harry Porter fan and how long have you been a Harry Porter fan? You must be fascinated by the magic wizard world and witchcraft and impressed by the three teenagers, Harry Porter and his two friends. It has been the hottest topic when we were school and university. No one escape from the charm of Harry Porter and all his adventures. It is valuable memories and worth to collect for future memory. It is easy to get full collections of DVDs and books, but have you ever thought about making a video with all your favorite pictures and scenes when you were ripping a DVD to backup onto your computer or transfer the video to your handheld devices?
It is easy and quick to achieve so. Just follow my instructions below.
Things you need: DVD Ripper, Harry Porter Disk, Windows Movie Maker and Computer.
As for the DVD Ripper, I would like to try Pavtube DVD Ripper, I myself use it. By the way, it is the first DVD Ripper that is reviewed at pcworld.com which is the most authoritative magazine and website offering reviews and news about PC relates products.
Step1. Launch Pavtube DVD Ripper and import DVD movie to the files list.
Step2. Select the movie, and hit the preview button.

Tips: To capture the video in a more detailed way and make sure that all your favorite pictures are captured you need to split the DVD movie to different chapters and capture videos one by one.
Step3. Drag the bar below the preview window and decide which picture you would like to save. By the way, you will see why I use Pavtube DVD Ripper to capture the screen, the image is of excellent quality, and you can define the picture size and format. Sounds super cool! And for the convenience of importing the snapshots at one time or import in an order you prefer, you can also specify a folder or different folders.
Step4 Click the icon of folder and you will see the pictures. By the way, some pictures may have black edges depending on the movie you are capturing. If you don’t like that, you can cut that off with Photo editing software, you can try Snagit, or Photoshop and others. It is very easy. And forgive me for I don’t spare many words on it.
Step5. Launch the program of Windows Movie Maker and hit the option of import pictures from your PC.

Step6. Drag the pictures to the story board and choose video effects or transition ways for each picture.

Wow, thank you for your reply, here is an addition for your tip
Have you ever thougnt about owning an episode of yourself? You may want to have every episode of Hepburn in your iPhone. You may want to have the excellent music of Titanic into a video. Therefore some editing job is a must on your DVD movie and convert them with the customized editing to AVI, MPEG, WMV and 3GP video. This will be very interesting, since you are creating some kind of new movie all by yourself.
To edit the DVD video, you need to find a DVD decrypting application, or DVD ripping software which provides editing options as much as possible. I am using Pavtube DVD Ripper, so, today, I just take Pavtube DVD Ripper for example.
First, you need to import the DVD movies to the DVD ripping software.
Second, select the titles you would like to do editing and if you don’t know much about the movie you import, click the preview button to make sure that you are editing the right titles or chapters. And the hit the button of “Edit” to adjust the effect, trim or crop the videos.
Third, now let’s start the editing. Pavtube DVD Ripper offers three main editing sections, effect setting, trimming and cropping.
Effect Setting: Options are contrast, brightness for video and volume for audio.

Drag the slider bar for Brightness, Contrast, and Volume to preview the effect on the right column.
If the DVD image does not display correctly, you can tick the checkbox for "Flip" to fix it.
Remember to hit “Apply”. Hit "Apply to Child Chapters" if the file you select is a title, or "Apply to All" if the file you select is a chapter. Otherwise, you may click the "Reset" button to gain the default settings.
Trim: This is intended for users to define the beginning time as well as ending time. You can trim the section you want through either defining a specific time or an ending time or drag the side bars at the two ends to clip the movie section. The later is much more convenient. Keep in mind that you must hit the button of “Apply” and “OK” or you have spend all the time in vain.
Crop: This is intended for users to crop the image.
Select an option under the drop down list of the "Letter Box", drag the dashed frame on the preview pane, or enter value on the boxes for the four positions to set the pixels you want to cut off. If the file you select to customize is a title, you can tick the checkbox for "Apply to Child Chapters" to get other files with the same settings under the "Crop" tab.

As this guide shows, you can tick several items on the major interface and apply the settings one by one, and in this way, you keep different settings for different titles or chapters, for example, you may have trim first 3 minutes of the Title1_2, the last 30 seconds of the Title1-3 etc.
To combine the sections you have selected and edited, all you need to do is to tick the checkbox of “Merge into one file” next to the format selecting box.

And finally, you will get the videos consisting of your favorite parts and with your preferred settings.

Sharing Problems with you
One of my friends tries to put a movie from one of my DVD's to my newly acquired 80 iPod Video. He is using DVD Fab Platinum 3.0.5.0.It's converts without any error messages but only half the movie. The file is half the size that what was showing on the screen and progress stops at 52 %.
I suppose this maybe the problem that app cannot read correct data from DVD so conversion finished in half of the movie, I suggest trying to convert other titles in this DVD or try to use other profile in "Generic" or "PSP" to convert this title and see the result.
If this does not work, look at the DVD in the Customize mode and see if the main movie is not perhaps broken up into two titles. The MPEG 4 modes will only encode ONE title at a time. If the DVD is structured so that the second half of the movie is in another title, it would produce the result you are seeing. There is a way around it if this is the problem.
DVDFab has a few issues with the iPod format and decryption.
Try the following;
1. Get yourself a copy of DVD Decrypter. If you are unable to find it, get Pavtube DVD Ripper from Pavtube DVD Ripper - Professional DVD Ripper and Convert DVD to iPod/iPhone and choose DVD VOB format to backup your DVD movie on your hard drive.
2. Try converting the DVD again. This way, you chose to remove the CSS protection first and then convert DVD to iPod Video again.
You may need to copy the main movie only if it fails.
I brought this program to do the same thing but have ended up using other programs after having too many problems. Nice concept in DVDFab iPod conversion. If you find you iPod battery drains quickly, repack the files with Apple QuickTime Pro. You will have to register QuickTime to have this option.
All these method sounds fussy and complicated and there is no way to trouble yourself so much at all. A smart DVD to iPod Converter is enough to help you out and enables you convert DVD to iPod immediately.
All you need to do is to import the DVD movie to the program, choose output format and hit the button of “Convert” to convert the movie. What’s more, Pavtube DVD to iPod Converter is 50% discounted and it costs $14.5. Though most people prefer freeware if there is one, this DVD to iPod Converter is really a value.
