Is it possible to port a number from Sprint to Boost Mobile?

I went to a corporate Sprint/Boost Mobile store and the rep. I purchased the Boost phone from told me that I could not port a number from Sprint over to my new Boost phone because they are owned by the same company. This sounds suspicious to me. Perhaps he just didn't want to deal with me because Boost Mobile sales do not pay commissions.
